Reading for Pleasure
At Hucknall Flying High Academy, reading is at the heart of everything that we do. As you enter the school, get lost in the illustrations from 'The Lost Words' by Robert McFarlane and Jackie Morris. Immerse yourself in the world of Hogwarts whilst selecting a book from our Harry Potter themed library.
Novel Studies & Immersive Environments
At Hucknall Flying High Academy, we take a Novel Studies approach to English. Our curriculum is centred around a selection of high quality texts with rich vocabulary, plots, themes and a diverse range of characters. Our classrooms are themed each term to match, or compliment, the text we are studying in Novel Studies. We have had the river from 'Wind in the Willows', the fire daemon from 'The Firework Maker's daughter, Lindbergh's workshop from 'Lindbergh and the Adventures of a Flying Mouse' and more!
All classrooms have a reading display and area dedicated to reading to further promote a love of reading in their classrooms and each term we order a selection of texts from the Inspire Library Services to support the children's learning across the wider curriculum to further boost the access to texts that we already are fortunate to have in our school library.
Whole Class Guided Reading
Everyday our children take part in whole class guided reading. We pride ourselves in choosing a diverse range of texts for the children to study across a variety of genres. Our book blankets for each year group are available below. We follow the FFT journalling approach to reading which we have found to be highly engaging and the children learn about reading skills within the context of the stories that they are reading making learning memorable and giving opportunities to make connections and develop transferable skills across any book that they read.
Each term we release a reading newsletter with recommendations from our staff, pupils and new book releases for every age group.
