Curriculum at Hucknall FHA
At Hucknall Flying High Academy our vision is to “Make every day count.” This is embodied through our carefully constructed knowledge-based curriculum which is designed to use every opportunity to prepare our children to be compassionate citizens of our world, building their cultural capital. It reflects the Flying High Partnership’s intent of promoting well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the next stage of their journey.
We define curriculum as the totality of a child’s experience at Hucknall Flying High Academy including not only what, but also how, each child learns. Our broad and balanced curriculum has been developed to inspire our children through enquiry, addressing the identified barriers to learning, to deliver the skills, cultural knowledge and understanding to achieve every day of their lives. Our curriculum encompasses our trust values of aspiration, confidence, creativity, enjoyment, perseverance, pride, responsibility, and enterprise and promotes our school values to ‘be kind, work hard and fly high!’
It is our duty through our curriculum, to ensure our children are ready to flourish at secondary school and have the capacity to be successful in what they explore in the next stage of their educational journey. For this to happen they must strive to achieve the expected standards in English and Maths. They must have an understanding of modern Britain, that celebrates the differences that we all have in our life choices, relationships and opinions.
As a staff we have developed our curriculum vision which is based on the context and needs of our local community. Our curriculum is rich and varied and provides our children with high quality education and experiences that support the development of the whole child, through an interwoven emphasis on PSHE. We design our curriculum through the lens of the 6 As which align closely to the Ethic of Excellence work by Ron Berger. We strive for academic excellence at Hucknall Flying High Academy based around the following principles, which overlap where appropriate:
Academic Rigour – to challenge our children to produce their best and aspire to the highest academic outcomes possible, developing their vocabulary, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
Authenticity – to create situations where children are inspired through authentic contexts, empowering them to leave their mark on the wider world.
Active Learning – to create ambitions for our children and our school community, engaging pupils in educational experiences that are rich and purposeful, creating memorable experiences that maintain in the long-term memory.
Adult Connections – to give purposeful meaning, context, and value to learning, preparing our children for the next stage in their education through positive relationships with the adults they work with.
Applied Learning – to provide memorable learning experiences which expand their understanding through the correct application of the deep knowledge content gained, showing how learning links to everyday life.
Assessment Practices – to give children opportunity to articulate their knowledge, learning and understanding through appropriate means of assessment.
‘Once a child sees that they are capable of excellence, a child is never the same. They have a new self-image’ (Ron Berger).
