At Hucknall Flying High Academy our PSHE curriculum aims to help our children to build friendships and positive relationships in an age appropriate way. We aim to raise awareness of attitudes and values, developing personal and social skills and promoting knowledge and understanding. RSHE covers more than just biological facts and information. It endeavours to help children develop self-esteem, responsibility for themselves and gain skills and understanding to develop caring, stable, healthy relationships. An understanding and appreciation of values such as self-respect, dignity, marriage, civil partnership and parental duty should be encouraged in all pupils together with a sensitivity to the needs of others. RSHE and PSHE will look at aspects of diversity in an inclusive and non-judgemental way. We believe the best way to deliver RSHE is through our PSHE curriculum.
Aims of the PSHE Curriculum
The main objectives of our PSHE Curriculum are to:
- Develop pupil’s confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships
- Teach pupils the correct terminology and vocabulary to name their body parts and describe how their bodies work
- Help pupils to understand a range of relationships, and the importance of building positive relationships with others, involving trust and respect, in both person and online
- Teach pupils to recognise unsafe situations and be able to protect themselves and ask for help and support
- Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
PSHE Key Knowledge Progression Document
Across school PSHE is explicitly taught weekly, through PSHE lessons. We use Coram Scarf's, which provides a whole-school approach to help us to teach our children about the essential elements (safety, caring, achievement, resilience and friendship). Alongside this, we respond to the needs of our children, teaching PSHE as and when it is needed in response to ad-hoc situations that may arise during the week. We teach PSHE through a range of different teaching methods, so that it is accessible to all children. Alongside this, we consider National dates that we will celebrate as a whole school, which are inclusive to all of the beliefs and values of our school community.

Lesson Design Matrix
Through our teaching, we aim to equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices and apply their learning to new contexts. Children are empowered to reach their full potential academically in order to prepare them for the future.
A researched based 'Teaching and Learning' model has been created and implemented across the whole school. The implementation of our lesson design ensures their is a consistent approach to high quality teaching and learning throughout and all pupils achieve the best possible outcomes regardless of ability and/or other factors.
Our lesson design is not to be seen and used as a rigid framework, but as a fluid model. A session would typically begin with a 'Reactivate', followed by the 'Teach, Facilitate, Model'. From the point, staff have the flexibility to navigate the model, as they deem appropriate.
