Art & Design
Art allows you to trust your ideas, express yourself and endlessly create...
At Hucknall Flying High, we believe that every child is a unique artist, with talents that can be nurtured and flourished. We have crafted an Art curriculum that provides all children to have plentiful opportunities to embark on their own artistic journey. Our curriculum strives to develop our children's confidence, skills and talents to empower them to create aspirational, authentic artwork where they trust their ideas, express themselves and endlessly create.
Further to this, our 6A curriculum principles underpin the foundations of our art curriculum with the children experiencing academic rigour through the planned content, authentic experiences and connections with artists and visits to galleries and museums. Alongside, active learning through hands-on exploration of media and materials whilst opportunities are built in for the children to apply their learning to an authentic purpose and finally provide on-going assessment through self and peer critique throughout.
Our aims are to ensure that all pupils:
- view art as a creative process: gaining knowledge from experts, exploring new ideas and using a range of materials
- produce creative work, exploring, recording and documenting their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using artistic language and vocabulary
- grow in confidence, develop resilience and become opinion-formers
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Because of this we have developed a sequence known as the 'Creative Thinking Sequence' to ensure our termly projects follow a journey of learning. These are focused on nurturing creativity and the critical thinking process involved in developing artists and exceptional work that is filled with creativity.
To summarise, the sequence follows five steps that allow the children to:
- Discover artwork and artists that inspire their ideas, decisions and knowledge of art history, culture and influence.
- Explore media, materials, techniques and skills.
- Participate in the process of design.
- Create authentic and high-quality pieces of art work using a range of techniques and media.
- Reflect, critique and evaluate the projects process and their learning to further improve their artwork, knowledge and skills.

Knowledge Progression Documentation
Across our school we have Art projects running throughout the year. These ensure that the coverage of painting, sculpture, drawing and further art techniques are developed with progressive content building from Nursery to Year 6. This has been planned out using the Flying High Trust Knowledge Progression Documentation to formulate the projects for each year. Take a look at our yearly overview below to see the artists of study and the authentic projects the children engage with.
Whole School Project Plan
Each Art project is documented in the children's sketchbooks following our 'Creative Thinking' cycle. These are used to capture the childrens, thoughts, inspiration, designs and ideas. Finally, each art project results in a final outcome that may be produced as a class piece, collaborative peer creations or individual pieces. Take a look at some of our Art outcomes below.
Art Outcomes
In addition, we have invested in an Art & D.T work space to ensure a dedicated area in school is available for the children to utilise when completing their art work. This space allows the children to have an authentic experience, providing a real-life view of what an art studio is and how it is used. Ultimately, we want to further inspire the children to pursue more creative careers when leaving school.
