'In the world of words, anything is possible'
At Hucknall Flying High, we believe that every child is a celebrated writer and reader, with talents that can be nurtured and flourished through our carefully crafted English curriculum. We have structured an English curriculum that provides all children to have plentiful opportunities to embark on their own journey as a writer and reader. Our curriculum strives to develop our children's confidence, skills and talents to empower them to create aspirational, authentic pieces of writing where they explore texts, immerse themselves in a genre and create authentic writing outcomes which are purposeful and creative.
Further to this, our 6A curriculum principles underpin the foundations of our English curriculum with the children experiencing academic rigour through the planned content, authentic experiences and connections with authors and visits which inspire a love of reading and writing. Alongside, active learning through hands-on exploration through immersion and drama, whilst opportunities are built in for the children to apply their learning to an authentic writing purpose and finally provide on-going assessment through self and peer critique throughout, termly staff moderation and assessment against national assessment frameworks.
Our aims are to ensure that all pupils:
- view reading as a life skill; building resilience and a passion for fluency
- are inspired to write with purpose, learning how to write a range of genres
- grow in confidence, develop opinions and the ability to reflect on their own writing to edit and improve
- know about great authors, illustrators and poets
- take pride in their writing, carefully considering handwriting and structure

Our Writing Sequence
Because of this we have developed a sequence known as the 'HFHA Writing Sequence' to ensure our genres of writing follow a structured sequence throughout school. These are focused on nurturing creativity, capturing imagination and the process involved in creating exceptional work that is filled with high quality vocabulary, a strong understanding of the text and purpose of the writing.
We immerse the children in the text before they are expected to write about it. Reading texts and immersing yourself in the story is called 'embodied cognition' where you are literally living in the shoes of the characters. This is how we want the children to feel. It supports memory and imagination but also levels the playing field in terms of cultural capital.
We ensure that children are fully aware of the audience and purpose of the genre and always start with the end in mind so that the children know what they are building up to write.
