Geography
"Exploration is curiosity put into action..."
At Hucknall Flying High, we believe that every child is a geographer, with talents that can be nurtured and flourished. We have created a Geography rich curriculum that provides all children to have plentiful opportunities to embark on their own journey of understanding the world that we live in. Our curriculum strives to develop our children's confidence, skills and talents to empower them to ask questions, explore and problem solve about the world in which they live.
Further to this, our 6A curriculum principles underpin the foundations of our Geography curriculum with the children experiencing academic rigour through the planned content, authentic experiences and connections with visits to geographical relevant locations. Alongside, active learning through hands-on exploration of the geography around them. Opportunities are built in for the children to apply their learning to an authentic purpose which is relevant and current.
Aims of the Geography Curriculum
Our aims are to ensure that all pupils:
- view geography as a study of the land, features, inhabitants and phenomena of the Earth.
- Are able to make sense of their world.
- Are curious and fascinated about the world in which they live.
- Recognise that places are changing and understand why.
- That different places across the world are connected and how.
Geography Key Knowledge Progression Document
Across our school we have Geography enquiries which run during our Autumn term, however we make connections through other subjects throughout the year - allowing children to make connections with their new learning and reactivating previous learning. This ensures that there is a full coverage of the National Curriculum with progressive content being taught from Nursery to Year 6. This has been planned out using the Flying High Trust Knowledge Progression Documentation to formulate the enquiries for each year.

Lesson Design Matrix
Through our teaching, we aim to equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices and apply their learning to new contexts. Children are empowered to reach their full potential academically in order to prepare them for the future.
A researched based 'Teaching and Learning' model has been created and implemented across the whole school. The implementation of our lesson design ensures their is a consistent approach to high quality teaching and learning throughout and all pupils achieve the best possible outcomes regardless of ability and/or other factors.
Our lesson design is not to be seen and used as a rigid framework, but as a fluid model. A session would typically begin with a 'Reactivate', followed by the 'Teach, Facilitate, Model'. From the point, staff have the flexibility to navigate the model, as they deem appropriate.
