Curriculum
Within Year 2, our curriculum is taught across the year through our three enquiries. The enquiries all have an overarching question which the children work towards answering through an authentic outcome. Our enquiries are developed by driving and enhancing subjects. In addition, our enquiries connect to our 6A curriculum principles, and shape the way the enquiries are planned and delivered.
Autumn Term - Why are we treating our world like a rubbish bin?
For our first enquiry, the children will study 'Why are we treating our world like a rubbish bin?' exploring our world through Geography. The children will look at our oceans and continents, the animals who call our world home, the threats that our planet faces and our role in looking after our world. Our enquiry intends to inspire and develop the children's responsibility for looking after our world, through the exploration of plastic pollution and other ways that our world is under threat. We ensure that throughout our enquiry we promote the importance of wider community, broadening the children's understanding beyond their usual school community. Alongside this, the children will develop their artistic skills and will work on creating a clay sculpture, drawing their learning together in their final outcome.
Our Key Enquiry Texts
Throughout the enquiry we will study the key texts below, we aim to ensure the texts we choose are high-quality and engage the children in their current learning. These books provide a fantastic connection to the content taught and are a fantastic resource to further explore at home.
Our Autumn Enquiry in Photographs
Spring Term - What is the history of the streets beneath our feet?
Our Spring enquiry, 'what is the history of the streets beneath our feet?' will focus on uncovering the history of flight. In particular, the children will learn about Hucknall's significance in the history of flight. The children will learn about some of the most famous aviators and their inventions, including the Montgolfier Brothers' invention of the hot air balloon, The Wright Brothers' invention of the first aeroplane and Amelia Earhart's famous flight around the world. Along the way, they will explore primary and secondary sources of information and the significance of our street and class names. In order to answer the enquiry question, the children will create a virtual tour of the local area to share with others just how special our local area is.
