Phonics Updates
Week Beginning: 13.07.2020
This week in Phonics, your child will practise learning and recapping some of the early phase two phonemes. They will explore initial sounds and begin to sort phonemes. They will focus on a phoneme a day, practising their letter formation.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 13.07.2020
Week Beginning: 06.07.2020
This week in Phonics, your child will revisit aspect 5 - alliteration. They will explore initial sounds and begin to generate phrases such as 'slithering snake' and 'smelly socks.' Encourage your child to listen carefully to the sounds in the words they are working with as well as focusing on pronouncing the sounds correctly.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 06.07.2020
Week Beginning: 29.06.2020
This week in Phonics, your child will revisit aspect 7 - Oral Blending. They will focus on tuning into sounds and hearing phonemes, which create simple CVC words. They will need lots of opportunities to hear you modelling blending out loud in order for them to begin hearing the sounds together to generate words.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 29.06.2020
Week Beginning: 22.06.2020
This week in Phonics, your child will revisit aspect 4 - Rhythm & Rhyme. They will focus on exploring, hearing and matching 'rhyming pairs'. This is an earlier aspect in our Phonics scheme, however, consolidation and practise is essential. Your child needs to build their confidence in identifying and hearing words that rhyme. This will ensure they practise their listening skills. You will need to emphasise the importance of tuning into the last phoneme/sound that they hear.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 22.06.2020
Week Beginning: 15.06.2020
This week in Phonics, your child will explore, practise playing and tune into 'instrumental sounds'. This is an earlier aspect in our Phonics scheme, however, consolidation and practise is essential. Your child needs to build their confidence in identifying and naming specific instruments. As well as having an understanding of the sounds they make and how these can be adapted and changed.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 15.06.2020
Week Beginning: 08.06.2020
This week in Phonics, your child will revisit 'inital sounds'. They will listen to and explore the first inital sound in words. The activities this week focus on sorting between the different sounds they hear and beginning to recognise what the phonemes look like. It would be fantastic if you could encourage your child to practise writing some of these graphemes.
Weekly Phonics Activities
Week Beginning: 01.06.2020
This week in Phonics, your child will revisit aspect 7 - Oral Blending. This skill is to enable the children to tune into the sounds heard in words. In preparation for learning to read, children must first be able to identify, hear and push the sounds together to create words. This week the children will practise oral blending with CVC words. These are words, which contain a consonant, vowel and a consonant. E.g: c-a-t, m-a-p, t-i-p. Encouraging your child to link these sounds (phonemes) with the letters (graphemes) will start to develop and build up their skills in the decoding and reading of words.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 01.06.2020
Week Beginning: 18.05.2020
This week in Phonics the children will revisit aspect 3 - Body Percussion. The children have practised this many times before in Nursery. However, it's always great to go back and consolidate learning. This week is very musical and the children will be exploring sounds through the use of their bodies. Have fun making lots of music together!
Weekly Phonics Activities - 18.05.2020
Week Beginning: 11.05.2020
This week in Phonics the children will focus on initial sounds. The initial sound is the first sound in a word. As the children are becoming increasingly confident with their phase two phonemes it will be great to see them beginning to apply their knowledge of sounds to objects and words. This week they will identify, compare and group the different sounds they hear.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 11.05.2020
Phonics Challenge Activities
Week Beginning: 04.05.2020
We will continue to post Phonics learning weekly, with any additional resources or videos etc added daily if they are needed to support that days activity.
In Nursery we follow the Letters and Sounds programme. This week, there is a focus on aspect 7 - 'Oral Segmenting'. Segmenting is a skill that your child will continue to develop as they progress throughout school. It enables them to learn how to spell and write. The phonemes are stretched out so that your child can hear the individual sounds within words. There is no expectation that your child has to be writing simple words yet however, it is a skill that we need to begin to model and expose your child to.
With many of our children becoming increasingly confident with their phase two phonemes it would be great to get them beginning to orally segment words aloud.
Practise the activities suggested for this week to begin to introduce this new concept to your child. Remember to keep it short, sharp and fun! Enjoy.

Week Beginning: 27.04.2020
We will continue to post Phonics learning weekly, with any additional resources or videos etc added daily if they are needed to support that days activity.
In Nursery we follow the Letters and Sounds programme. This week, there is a focus on aspect 5 - 'Alliteration'. We have covered this aspect previously within Nursery however, it is essential that we recap many of the aspects to ensure the children continue to practise and consolidate early reading skills. Many of our children are becoming increasingly confident with their phase two phonemes therefore, exploring alliteration will help to develop your child's understanding of inital sounds.
Weekly Phonics Activities - 27.04.2020
Week Beginning: 20.04.2020
We will now be posting Phonics learning weekly, with any additional resources or videos etc added daily if they are needed to support that days activity.
In Nursery we follow the Letters and Sounds programme. Each week, we will focus on a different aspect of Phase One. Have fun with the activities and enjoy helping your child with their learning. It is really important that your child has access to Phase One phonics as this provides them with the skills needed to move onto Phase Two when they start school. It is all about getting your child to tune in to hearing and identifying sounds. This week, there is a focus on aspect 7- 'Oral Blending and Segmenting.'
The alphablocks videos are a great resource to use when supporting your child's learning and exposure to oral blending and segmenting. In specific the videos, which focus on cvc words such as 'cat, dot, pen, dog and hen' are fantastic to share with your child. Watching these throughout the week will help to support your child's understanding of these two skills needed to develop their knowledge and learning of early reading.

Alphablocks
A great website to support Phonics development is Alphablocks. This can be found on the Cbeebies website. There are many videos and games to explore. These are a great resource for your child to use and provide fantastic learning opportunities. The Alphablocks also provide your child with the correct pronouncation of the pure sounds that they will begin to be exposed to over the coming months in preparation for school.
